Female Plumbers Thrive in Male Dominated Industry

HOUSTON, Texas (07/29/2015) – Plumbing has historically been considered a predominantly male-centric profession. However, this gender bias is seeing a challenge as more women enter into the plumbing industry and not only succeed, but excel in the profession.

“We have started seeing a shift in mentality when it comes to what are traditionally considered ‘male’ and ‘female’ professions”, stated Mary Kennedy Thompson, licensed plumber and President of Mr. Rooter Plumbing. “The idea that women aren’t capable of doing the job of a plumber, or other traditionally male-dominated trade professions, is quickly fading and we are seeing a generation of strong, talented women entering the industry.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for plumbers is strong, with an estimated growth of 21 percent by 2022, versus an average of 11 percent growth across all other industry occupations. In addition, the median age in the plumbing industry continues to climb, making plumbing a viable career path for those seeking to enter the industry and capture viable market share.

“We have seen a tremendous amount of positive benefits to having Daisy on our team”, said Natalie Saikowski, Executive Vice President of Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Montgomery County and Greater Houston Areas who employs Daisy Herrera, a female plumbing technician. “Our customers love and trust her. We have customers who call in each week to request Daisy.”

Herrera, who was recruited directly out of Everest Institute’s plumbing certification program, has excelled in the profession. “I think more females should consider the industry because I believe we can be the cutting edge in the quality of work produced,” said Herrera of her occupation. “Women are great at multi-tasking. You just need the confidence to know that you can do the work and you have to know your worth in the industry.”

“As the shortage in skilled tradesmen and plumbers continues to grow, we need to be looking for ways to increase the recruitment pool”, stated Thompson. “One of those ways is through the recruitment of women.” In addition, according to Saikowski, women technicians tend to make homeowners feel more comfortable and at ease about the person who is about to enter the home to fix their problem. “Women tend to be the person greeting our plumbing technicians when they visit the home. Therefore, having a woman show up at the door immediately puts them at ease”, said Saikowski.

With a growing desire for female technicians, Mario and Luigi may soon become Maria and Luigi.
